IONA Extends Leadership in Component-Based SOA Infrastructure Software

New Artix Release and Expanding Partner Relationship with AmberPoint Address Customers' Evolving SOA Requirements

DUBLIN, Ireland and WALTHAM, Mass. - October 10, 2006 - IONA® Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high-performance service-oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure solutions for mission-critical IT environments, today announced availability of the latest release of its Artix™ Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and expansion of its partner relationship with AmberPoint. The new release builds upon IONA's established component-based core technology required for successful SOA deployments and delivers key functionality in the areas of standards support, management, and service orchestration. Out of-the-box interoperability with AmberPoint, the industry's leading provider of SOA visibility, management and security solutions, marks a key milestone in the partnership first announced in April 2006.

The latest release of Artix and expanded partner relationship with AmberPoint deliver on IONA's stated strategy to offer a comprehensive set of distributed, standards-based SOA infrastructure components that can be deployed incrementally. This component-based approach has been proven to best meet the economic and technical realities of SOA adoption for Global 2000 customers. IONA's approach to SOA, which also embraces broad support for platforms, transports and protocols, as well as the ability to dynamically configure service endpoints in response to business change, enables customers to generate greater ROI from their technology investments, modernize IT environments without requiring significant reengineering and ultimately lower the total cost of IT operations.

"SOA deployments that rely on a single vendor, a single technology, or a single platform are certainly going to be few and far between," said Massimo Pezzini, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner. "A truly successful SOA deployment will enable organizations to extract additional value from existing infrastructure by making it more available to new systems and by ensuring that the entire architecture is agile enough to be responsive to an ever-changing business and technology landscape."

The new features in Artix, as well as out-of-the-box interoperability with AmberPoint, address the needs of customers deploying SOA in highly complex, mission-critical, environments. IONA, through its own technology or that of its partners, provides important functionality that empowers customers with the ultimate flexibility to choose how best to leverage existing IT assets, adopt solutions incrementally, and manage and deploy their infrastructure.

Enhancements to Artix include:

  • Expanded Standards, Platform and Transport Support. The new release of Artix adds support for SOAP 1.2, which complements existing support for SOAP 1.1 and effectively broadens the product's standards-based interoperability. Content-based routing eases integration of multiple applications in support of individual business events. Artix features persistent WS-RM, allowing applications to operate in a "fire and forget" manner without concern for failure at the software component, system or network level. Remote Method Invocation (RMI) support adds additional platform and protocol interoperability.
  • Enhanced Orchestration. Orchestration capabilities have been enhanced to include greater support for the enterprise QoS required for mission-critical SOA deployments. Security Identity Propagation enables the passing of secure credentials between services that are part of established BPEL processes. Greater support for seamless failover and load balancing in BPEL processes increases overall scalability.
  • Management Capabilities. The latest release of Artix makes it easier to manage large-scale, distributed SOA deployments. The availability of a JMX management console delivers greater visibility and control over Artix-based services. IONA's partnership with SOA runtime governance leader AmberPoint has produced out-of-the-box interoperability with AmberPoint, enabling sophisticated reporting on SOA performance metrics and supporting the dynamic configuration of policy changes and alarms/triggers.

"AmberPoint and IONA share a philosophy that a distributed, standards-based approach is the best route to achieving real SOA success," said Ed Horst, vice president of Marketing at AmberPoint. "Out-of-the-box interoperability provides the ability to not only analyze the activities between AmberPoint and Artix, but also achieve greater visibility into the inner workings of the Artix endpoints, enabling customers to more effectively monitor service-level agreements, quality of service, and exception-handling."

"IONA's approach to SOA is all about providing our customers with the right infrastructure components that adhere to three core principles which include incremental adoption, technology neutrality, and adaptability," explained Larry Alston, vice president, Marketing and Product Management, IONA. "Whether built by us or supplied through our partner ecosystem, our customers know that SOA infrastructure software from IONA enables them to deploy their SOA incrementally and in any IT environment. They also know that their resulting SOA deployment will be dynamic and adaptable, and thus able to support greater business agility."
