IONA SPONSORS ORBZONE.ORG, AN INDEPENDENT ONLINE PORTAL FOR CORBA USERS WORLDWIDE
orbzone.org Provides Information and Know-how to CORBA Architects and Developers
DUBLIN, Ireland & WALTHAM, Mass. - September 20, 2005 - IONA® Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high-performance integration solutions for mission-critical IT environments, today announced the company's sponsorship of orbzone.org, an online, vendor-independent portal dedicated to bringing together the worldwide community of CORBA® architects and developers. The portal is live and can be accessed at www.orbzone.org
The CORBA standard is considered to be one of the most widely deployed technology standards worldwide and is still the foundation for many of the most mission-critical IT systems for the telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing and government sectors. Through the sponsorship of orbzone.org, IONA is taking the lead on an initiative to offer a comprehensive and interactive online resource for this extensive and active community to share knowledge and receive up-to-date industry information. Primarily aimed at technical architects and developers, orbzone.org content will include updates on the latest vendor offerings and CORBA specifications, a CORBA industry events calendar, expert industry papers and news articles, in addition to a Wiki and a message board for users to exchange comments and share experiences.
"Organizations have made tremendous investments in CORBA and are continuously seeking ways to ensure they are yielding the greatest returns from those investments. They need to manage updates to their existing systems and want to learn best practices for extending CORBA to new, modern computing environments," said Steve Vinoski, chief engineer, IONA Technologies. "With more than 80% of the world's largest telecommunications firms and 70% of the Fortune 100 financial services companies relying on IONA's CORBA technology to run their most complex and mission-critical systems, IONA is a market leader in CORBA. With this heritage and experience, it made sense that IONA should take the lead on an initiative to bring this community together and promote a valuable and open exchange of industry information and CORBA expertise. Our intention is to ensure the portal exists as a vendor neutral and independent resource populated and effectively owned by the global CORBA user community."
Mr. Vinoski continued, "CORBA is a technology standard that embraces the principles of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), a trend that is rapidly becoming a mainstream approach to enterprise computing today. Companies considering SOA could benefit from the experiences of the CORBA community, giving the portal even wider appeal for any organization considering an enterprise-wide SOA implementation."
"We welcome this initiative from IONA and believe it will be a very valuable resource for many enterprises, such as ours, where CORBA is a critical component within their IT infrastructure," said Oliver Wulff, information system architect, CSC. "An open and independent forum to share knowledge and source the most up-to-date industry information will appeal to a broad spectrum of the CORBA community."
According to Massimo Pezzini, VP Distinguished Analyst at Gartner, "Over the last decade CORBA has pioneered many concepts that are at the core of technologies such as J2EE, Web services and SOA and for certain classes of distributed business critical applications it still represents one of the most appropriate choices. Newcomers to SOA should look at the experience of the CORBA community for best practices for enterprise grade distributed computing."
