IONA NAMES JIM BOAK, FORMERLY VICE PRESIDENT, TECHNICAL STRATEGY AT COMPAQ, AS NEW CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER

IONA Co-Founder Dr. Sean Baker will take on New Role as Chief Corporate Scientist and will remain a Director

Waltham, MA - September 18, 2001 - IONA®, the leading e-Business Platform provider for Total Business Integration™ (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced that Jim Boak has been appointed Chief Technology Officer. Boak, who joins IONA from Compaq (NYSE: CPQ), is responsible for setting corporate strategy as part of the IONA Senior Management Team, driving strategic relationships with key industry players, and serving as spokesman for IONA's technology vision.

Jim Boak spent more than six years at Compaq, most recently as Vice President, Technical Strategy in the Office of the CTO. His responsibilities included creation of Compaq's clustering, Internet, database, and applications groups, as well as development of a comprehensive corporate software strategy and management of Compaq's executive relationship with Microsoft. Prior to Compaq, Boak was Vice President for Technology at Migration Software of San Jose, California. His background includes hardware, software and operating system design for minicomputers and microprocessor systems. Over the last 30 years, his work has ranged from fault tolerant multiprocessor design, CAT scanner and process control design, through pioneering work in UNIX and Intel-based client server systems, to his recent work on technology for the distributed enterprise. Boak received his B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. from the University of Toledo.

As Chief Corporate Scientist and a member of IONA's Board of Directors, former CTO Sean Baker will be re-directing his time towards research and technical publications, and spending more time with his family.
