"Our goal in developing the iPortal Application Server 3.0 was not to simply provide organizations with an advanced application development environment, but to empower them with a scalable J2EE platform that is powerful enough to serve as the back-bone of their entire business integration solution," said Simon Pepper, director of J2EE products at IONA. "The iPortal Application Server 3.0 combines extensibility and performance to enable organizations to seamlessly integrate their internal systems and present them through the Web to perform complex business interactions and achieve Total Business Integration."
Designed for Extreme Programming Environments
Extreme Programming is a highly intuitive and productive application development process that is gaining popularity among developers of component-based systems, such as the J2EE platform and Microsoft .NET. The development and deployment experience using iPortal Application Server 3.0 was designed to complement this process:
- Using a sophisticated source code management facility, the iPortal Application Server offers incremental build capabilities and dynamic class loading technology.
- The iPortal Application Server offers the unique ability to re-deploy complete applications in live systems, reconfigure live applications and store live deployment configurations in stateful repositories.
- Bundled with and tightly integrated with the application server, the Forte" for Java v2.0 provides comprehensive development, build, deployment and distributed debugging capabilities.
Supplying e-Business Integration Capabilities
iPortal Application Server 3.0 is expressly designed to combine application server with enterprise integration capabilities out of the box:
- The iPortal Application Server is at the core of IONA's e-Business Platform for Total Business Integration, providing an end-to-end e-business integration solution combining A2Ai, B2Bi, XML, Web services, J2EE technology, CORBA and Enterprise Portal technologies.
- Existing applications or systems, written in C++, the Java programming language, COM+, C#, vb.NET, COBOL and PL/1 running on Windows, Unix and Mainframe platforms, can be leveraged with applications for the J2EE platform.
- Developers can easily browse for, implement, deploy, test and access Web Services for existing J2EE technology-based applications without the need to develop the XML or marshal SOAP.
- Improved interoperability between J2EE technology-based applications and JMS Messaging, Message Connection Pooling and Consumer classes are provided to deliver Message Driven Bean capabilities.
- The iPortal Application Server extends IONA's unique OS/390 integration ability by allowing Mainframe applications to seamlessly interoperate with J2EE technology-based applications while preserving the transactional and security properties.
- The iPortal Administration Console, a component of the iPortal Application Server, uses the latest Java Media Extension (JMX) technology and provides a complete and comprehensive extensible instrumentation and management solution for the J2EE platform.
- IONA's reliance on, and adherence to, J2EE in designing and developing iPortal Application Server 3.0 ensures that IONA will continue to provide broad support for such integration-focused enterprise Java features as EJB 2.0 and the J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA).
