IONA LAUNCHES SEMINAR SERIES SUPPORTING TOTAL BUSINESS INTEGRATION STRATEGY
March 21-22 Seminar by David Frankel Addresses the OMGs Model Driven Architecture in the Context of Total Business Integration
Waltham, MA. - March 8, 2001 - IONA®, the leading e-business platform provider for Total Business Integration™ (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced a five-part seminar series to educate IONAs customers, partners and other interested parties on the companies new Total Business Integration strategy. The first seminar, presented by IONAs David Frankel, will take place at the companys San Mateo facility on March 21-22, and will focus on related content from the OMGs recently announced Model Driven Architecture (MDA).
Announced today, the OMGs Model Driven Architecture provides a blueprint for developing software systems with the flexibility to reuse business logic over different, evolving technical architectures. MDA uses standard OMG technologies such as UML™ and XML Metadata Interchange™ (XMI) to enable companies to design and code their business logic components without "hard-wiring" to specific technologies. For example, when a particular business function, or component, needs to be exposed across a companys firewall in to an XML-based web environment (or vice versa) the change can be made without having to re-architect the entire component.
David Frankel, IONAs Chief Consulting Architect for Advanced Technologies, is a key contributor to the MDA initiative. Frankel is presenting the initial IONA seminar on Total Business Integration, and will cover MDA in detail. Frankel is member of the OMG Architecture Board and co-chair of the OMG's Business Object Initiative Working Group. He is widely recognized as a preeminent leader in developing international standards for business objects, with articles and technical papers regularly published in Software Magazine, Java Report and XML Journal.
"The concept of Model Driven Architecture fits perfectly into the larger set of issues addressed by IONAs Total Business Integration strategy, and were pleased to see the OMG place a heavy emphasis on this initiative," said Barry Morris, IONAs CEO. "Similar to many of todays standards, IONA contributed significantly to the formation of MDA, and we are taking a leading role on educating the market on this effort."

Rosen is co-author of the best-selling book, "Developing E-Business Systems and Architectures - a managers guide" (by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers).
