IONA ANNOUNCES iPORTAL XMLBUS
XML-Based Web Services Toolkit Extends IONA Suite to Facilitate Total Business Integration
Waltham, Ma - February 12, 2001 - IONA®, the leading e-business platform provider for Total Business Integration™ (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced iPortal XMLBus™ , an XML-based toolkit for building and deploying business-to-business Web services. As part of the IONA Suite™, iPortal XMLBus enables organizations to expose a variety of back-office systems and Internet information sources as XML-based services, which can be invoked by applications anywhere on the Internet. As a result, iPortal XMLBus enables developers to add Web service interfaces to an organization's enterprise portal or other e-business application.
"iPortal XMLBus meets a pressing need of organizations trying to leverage the Internet as a computing platform," said John Rymer, founder of Upstream Consulting, a consulting and analysis firm specializing in distributed computing technologies and markets. "Organizations are making large investments in XML to expose live data and functions via the Internet. IONA's iPortal XMLBus is targeted at this audience and should help IONA capitalize on this movement."
The iPortal XMLBus supports an increasingly popular approach to application development that exposes applications as dynamic, subscription-oriented services over the Web. This approach is particularly suitable for the integration of applications outside and often times inside the enterprise. The iPortal XMLBus provides a consistent, standards-based approach to exposing loosely coupled interfaces to other enterprise applications and business processes. XMLBus addresses the problems associated with the rapid customization of existing systems for integration with new and existing partner applications.
"The iPortal XMLBus elevates IONA's value proposition and enables us to provide total business integration for our customers," said Barry Morris, IONA's Chief Executive Officer. "XMLBus augments our J2EE and CORBA integration solutions, which are essential for integrating applications inside the enterprise, and it provides a standards-based medium to facilitate business-to-business integration across the Internet."
The addition of the iPortal XMLBus toolkit to the IONA Suite supports IONA's strategy to provide an end-to-end solution for integrating applications and business systems inside the enterprise and business processes outside of the enterprise known as business-to-business integration. Full details of IONA's strategy will be unveiled at a press conference at the W Hotel in San Francisco on February 15, 2001 at 9:00 AM PST.
Delivering Web Services Backed by Industry Standards
The iPortal XMLBus uses the Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) to describe Web services with XML. Registration and lookup of these WSDL service interfaces is conducted via a registry based on the Universal Description, Discover and Integration (UDDI) standard. The XMLBus uses Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) for invoking Web services. The WSDL, UDDI and SOAP specifications are being driven by the W3C, and IONA has been a significant contributor to the WSDL and SOAP initiatives.
"The iPortal XMLBus extends our Adaptive Runtime Technology (ART)-based infrastructure, and we were able to quickly build core aspects of the XMLBus in the form of an ART plug-in," said Steve Vinoski, IONA's Chief Architect and Vice President of Platform Technologies. "This is another proof point that IONA has the most advanced and flexible infrastructure on the market today, which enables us to support emerging XML standards in a timely fashion."
iPortal XMLBus will enter beta within 60 days and will be accessible from www.iona.com. Additional product details will follow in subsequent announcements.
