IONA TECHNOLOGIES ACQUIRES OBJECT ORIENTED CONCEPTS, INC.

Acquisition Extends IONAs Leadership in the Object Middleware Market and Adds Embedded/Real-Time Developer Capabilities to the Orbix Family

Waltham, MA - February 2, 2001 IONA Technologies®, the Enterprise Portal Company™ (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced that it has acquired Object Oriented Concepts, Inc. (OOC), to expand IONAs leadership in the object middleware market and to add embedded/real-time functionality to the Orbix®product family. This acquisition will be accounted for as a purchase and will close in the March quarter.

OOC is a privately-held company in Billerica, Massachusetts, that provides an advanced suite of object middleware products. OOCs flagship ORBacus product line and ORBacus/E technology will be incorporated with IONAs Orbix family, resulting in new offerings that strengthen developer productivity and offer new functionality for the telecommunications, embedded and real-time markets. Additional details on these product offerings will be made available in a subsequent release after the closing of the acquisition.

"The worldwide embedded software market is approximately a billion-dollar space, which until now has been somewhat untapped by our market-leading Orbix offerings," said IONAs CEO Barry Morris. "Incorporating OOCs technology into the Orbix family strengthens our developer offerings in the technical and embedded community, and enhances our offerings in the telecommunications space."

According to International Data Corporation, IONAs Orbix family has led the object middleware space for four consecutive years, with more than 40% of the market. In addition to adding more than 2,000 new product licenses and 350 customers from OOC, this acquisition brings more than 20 technical engineering experts to IONA.

OOCs President, Marc Laukien, will become IONAs Vice President of CORBA Development. He will play a key role in the delivery of new IONA object middleware offerings, with a particular focus on the telecommunications market.

"IONA has clearly dominated the middleware market, and is well on the way to owning the larger e-business infrastructure space," said Marc Laukien. "All of us at OOC are thrilled to join the IONA team, and we believe that OOCs outstanding technology will provide significant new opportunities for IONA."

Orbix 2000™ will remain the middleware of choice for enterprise applications and portals. ORBacus technology will cover the technical and embedded markets. ORBacus will continue to be available with full source code and will remain free for non-commercial use, while also offering features for tighter integration with Orbix 2000.

"Im delighted with this transaction from both a technology and a business perspective," said Dan Demmer, IONAs Chief Financial Officer. "It will be modestly accretive to our 2001 earnings per share."
