INDUSTRY-LEADING VENDORS ENDORSE SUN MICROSYSTEMS' NEW FORTE[TM] FOR JAVA[TM] PORTAL
Participants Plan to Expand Resources Available to Java Technology Developers
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JavaOne [sm] Developer Conference - June 6, 2000 - More than 20 industry-leading vendors today announced their support for Sun Microsystems' Forte[tm] for Java[tm] Portal, a virtual neighborhood where Java technology developers can share products, components and ideas. These companies will help to significantly extend the coverage of the site, contributing application components that will allow developers to achieve new levels of productivity and reliability for dot-com development. (See today's related release titled: "Sun Microsystems and Industry Leaders Join Forces to Revolutionize Software Development.")
By participating in the Forte for Java Portal, companies can distribute Forte for Java Community Edition code, extend the tools with complementary modules, or embed Forte for Java components in their offerings.
"The participation of other vendors in the Forte for Java Portal is vital to building an open, successful development marketplace that will speed the rate of development tool innovation," said David Taber, Director of Business Development, Forte Tools, Sun Microsystems. "We're delighted to kick off the program with such a strong set of innovative, independent vendors who are endorsing the Forte for Java Portal and contributing their expertise in areas such as modeling, lifecycle management, application servers and other technologies."
The Forte for Java Portal will help independent software vendors (ISVs), consultants and other firms bring their innovative products and services to market with dramatically lowered sales and marketing costs. The community already comprises 300,000 downloads of Forte for Java Community Edition and is expected to grow by another 1,000,000 copies distributed via download and CD-ROM this year.
Vendors participating in the Forte for Java Portal have the following options:
- ISVs can help speed the time to market for tool innovations by leveraging Forte for Java technologies. ISVs can license and embed Forte for Java modules in their products, so that they need only build value-added features.
- Extension providers can build plug-in components and products that will run on top of Forte for Java or any other NetBeans[tm] software open source compatible products.
- Resellers will have access to the entire Forte for Java line, as additional products become available, to use as extensions to their own product lines or their consulting services offerings.
- Distributors may elect to bundle the Forte for Java Community Edition binaries with their products, making the software more widely available to a broader audience.
