Orbix 6 CORBA: Administration and Deployment

Target Population: People who are experienced in administering application systems in a distributed environment.
Pre-requisites: Interest in network application system management is essential. Exposure to the management of the network systems for Internet applications (Web servers, ftp servers, client-server databases, CORBA) is highly advantageous. Basic understanding of distributed software systems (DCE, Application Servers, CORBA) is desirable.
Duration/Format: 3 days. This is a course involving lectures, and hands-on exercises, delivered by an experienced IONA Orbix instructor.

Course Objectives:

On the completion of the course, the participants will:

  • Have a basic knowledge of the implementation of CORBA objects with the Portable Object Adapter (POA).
  • Describe the features of Orbix and how they can be used.
  • Install Orbix.
  • Configure an Orbix environment.
  • Manage an Orbix environment.
  • Deploy Orbix client and server applications.
  • Configure and manage load balancing and redundancy.
  • Manage logging and troubleshooting.

Introduction to Orbix Environment

  • Overview of the components and services in Orbix

Manage the Naming Service

  • Detailed use of the CORBA Naming Service

Activate CORBA Servers Automatically

  • Detailed use of POAs
  • Process control and activation on-demand

Configure Orbix for High Availability

  • Overview of high availability in Orbix: clustering, fault tolerance, and load balancing
  • Clustering Orbix services and server applications
  • Load balancing configuration

Manage ORB Configuration

  • Overview of Configuration Repository and file-based domains
  • Managing configuration scopes, namespaces, and variables
  • Locator and Node Daemon configuration and management

Manage Logging and Trouble Shooting

  • Overview of Orbix logging levels
  • User-defined logging settings
  • Log output control
  • Trouble shooting with GIOP SNOOP plug-in
