Poste Italiane, Italy's national postal service, offers post office, courier, Internet, and bank services via 14,000 post offices, a Web site, self-service kiosks, and a contact center. Poste Italiane's mission is to provide core postal services, communication, logistic and financial services all over Italy. It employs more than 150,000 people and has revenue of more than 8.5 billion euros.
Customer Challenge
Poste Italiane needed to become a modern "service center for citizens" offering new partner-provided products and new channels for reaching customers, including self-service ATMs, kiosks, the Web, mobile devices, and a contact center. These new channels needed to share data and capabilities from Poste Italiane's existing IT infrastructure and distributed partner systems across diverse, incompatible hardware and software platforms.
Solution
Poste Italiane's Business Partner Integration (BPI) infrastructure, implemented using IONA's Artix ESB, provided a solution that was incrementally deployed throughout a distributed network of partners, each with systems previously built on different platforms and messaging systems. Poste Italiane required a SOA solution that was incremental, technology-neutral, and dynamic and adaptable as new partners and products were brought on-line. The highly distributed nature of Post Italiane's partner network, and the larger e-government initiative into which these activities fit, required a flexible integration backbone. Artix ESB provided that backbone with high performance smart endpoints without creating yet another expensive layer of infrastructure that would only be partially used and would not be able to adapt to meet tomorrow's needs.
Results
Poste Italiane reduced time-to-market for introducing new services, decreased incremental costs for new service development, and streamlined and modernized existing systems to create an agile infrastructure for re-use in a larger e-government initiative. Poste Italiane delivered new offerings from partners and made existing offerings available to a wider audience at a fraction of the cost of other solutions without having to replace their existing infrastructure and without the tyranny of vendor lock-in. Artix allowed the efficient re-use of existing functional elements, the integration of all customer channels using the same back-end systems, and the ability to offer partner products - including mortgages from Deutsche Bank - to their customers seamlessly.
