Credit Suisse

Products: Orbix

Industry: Finance

Credit Suisse, a leading global financial services company headquartered in Zurich, needed a way to cross-sell between business units, reuse services implemented on different platforms, and drive down their IT operating costs. IONA provided infrastructure to integrate mainframe, Unix, and Windows services using different messaging systems making existing systems more agile and capable of deploying new products and services.

Customer Challenge

Credit Suisse needed a way to cross-sell between different units effectively, reduce the cost of providing existing services, provide an easier way to deploy new products, and comply with new regulations, all while using existing legacy infrastructure. A majority of services were implemented using mainframe systems, but that was only one of 4 major platforms in use.

Solution

Credit Suisse implemented a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that could connect services developed on multiple platforms across the organization. IONA ORBIX formed an integral part of the communications infrastructure inside Credit Suisse's enterprise-wide information bus. IONA technology provided a distributed, standards-based approach to connecting a heterogeneous network of incompatible systems each using different messaging systems and different hardware and software platforms. IONA's solution was scalable and provided the high performance Credit Suisse required.

Results

Using IONA technology Credit Suisse was able to achieve 70% reuse of their 2500 services throughout the company. Development costs were reduced by 30-70%. New products were deployed in half the time. 1.2 billion calls were made to their mainframe back-end systems through the new SOA infrastructure as of spring 2006.

Customer Quote

"Central to our initial selection of Orbix was IONA's strong commitment to the product and the company's pioneering work to establish CORBA as the accepted industry standard it is today. Our IT infrastructure is supported by an extensive Orbix deployment which has successfully scaled to meet the evolving needs of our SOA strategy. In the future we will explore Web services and potentially enable some of our systems with new technologies such as Artix."
